Lokpal gets its first face as Justice PC Ghosh

Former Supreme Court Judge Pinaki Chandra Ghose has been recommended to be appointed as first Lokpal under the Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013.

Former Supreme Court judge Justice Pinaki Chandra Ghose was appointed as the Country's first Lokpal, by a panel headed by the Prime Minister, for a term of five years or till he attains the age of 70. Justice Ghose retired as a Supreme Court Judge in May 2017, and has been a member of the National Human Rights Commission since June 2017.

Prior to his elevation to the Supreme Court in 2013, he had served as Chief Justice of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, where he convicted Sasikala, the live-in companion of Jayalalitha, in a corruption case. Before that, he served as a Justice of the Calcutta High Court.

By definition in the Lokayukta Act, Institution of Lokpal is headed by a person who is or has been a Chief Justice of India or is or has been a Judge of the Supreme Court or an Eminent Person. Passed in 2013, the Lokpal Act involves the setting up of a Lokpal at the Centre and Lokayuktas in States, to look into cases of corruption against certain categories of public servants.

As Lokpal of the country, Justice PC Ghose will have the power of inquiry into allegations of corruption against sitting and former ministers and parliamentarians.

Former Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) Chief Archana Ramasundaram, ex-Maharashtra Chief Secretary Dinesh Kumar Jain, Mahender Singh and Indrajeet Prasad Gautam have been appointed as Non-Judicial Members of the Anti-Corruption Ombudsman.

While Justices Dilip B Bhosale, Pradip Kumar Mohanty, Abhilasha Kumari and Ajay Kumar Tripathi, have been appointed as judicial members of Lokpal.
